SPOON

SPOON – Driving Sustainable Change is a European project that aims to empower people to transform food systems. We believe that, to achieve lasting change, communities must be part of the solution. That is why we connect citizens with organisations and researchers to encourage behavioural change and create a fairer and more sustainable food future.

LOGOS

Description

The main objective of the SPOON project is to accelerate the transition towards sustainable food systems through the strategic use of citizen science and digital tools.

The initiative is aligned with the major goals and strategies of Horizon Europe, addressing key issues such as food security, sustainable food production and citizen empowerment. It also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

The SPOON conceptual framework revolves around the implementation of six living labs across Europe, selected for their diverse local realities and sustainability challenges. These labs will be developed in Braunschweig (Germany), Thessaloniki (Greece), Turin (Italy), Bruges (Belgium), the Pomurje region (Slovenia) and València (Spain).

How do we do it?

Through Citizen Science, where people actively contribute to research and decision-making processes, helping to shape food systems that reflect their everyday lives and real needs.

Pilot in Valencia

In Valencia, the project analyses issues such as the consumption of local products, food waste, waste generation, the promotion of organic and local agriculture, support for local products and markets, and the integration of sustainable and healthy eating concepts into programmes designed to improve diet and health.

To achieve this, the project collaborates with organisations from the Valencian ecosystem that promote a more sustainable, healthy and fair local food system based on the right to food, as well as civil society organisations specialised in supporting people experiencing food insecurity in the city of València.

The main objectives of SPOON are to deepen scientific knowledge about food environments, increase policymakers’ capacity to make evidence-based decisions, foster cross-sector collaboration, and strengthen citizens’ ability to change food consumption behaviours and improve local food environments.
